Resources for free curriculum

The California Education and the Environment Initiative (California EEI) Curriculum is a cooperative, statewide effort to help K-12 students learn about the environment and how it relates to their everyday lives.

Low cost stuff for the classroom

Freecycle
A grassroots nonprofit of people who are giving and getting stuff for free in their towns. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer. Membership is free.

  • Sonoma Compost Company tour

    See how yard debris collected countywide through curbside and drop-off recycling programs is made into compost by Sonoma Compost Company. Located at the Central Disposal Site, the tour includes the municipal composting facility, wood reuse area and demonstration garden. This tour is suitable for grades 4th and up.

    See how garbage collected in Sonoma County gets processed. The Central Disposal site includes the reuse/recycling area, municipal composting program, wood reuse & recycling program, landfill gas power plant and Household Toxics Facility. This tour is suitable for grades 4th and up.

  • Cool Schools Program Sonoma County

    Instruction suitable for high schools in Sonoma County
    Working with high school clubs, the Cool Schools is a program of the Climate Protection Agency whose mission is to inspire action in response to the climate crisis.
  • Environmental Discovery Center  
    Instruction suitable for grades 1-6
    The Environmental Discovery Center of Sonoma County (EDC), a partnership established by the Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation, hosts school field trips.
  • University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Program

    The Sonoma County Master Gardeners provide instruction to classrooms on worm composting by special request.
  • Sonoma Ecology Center
    Instruction suitable for grades K-12 in the Sonoma Valley Unified School District as well as Kenwood Elementary School.
    The Sonoma Ecology Center (SEC) works in several different capacities to facilitate environmental education programming. They have 5 different educational modules that all fall under the umbrella of the K-12 Watershed Education Program.
